The British are avid travellers

The dawn of the package holiday industry brought about a huge change in holiday habits and cheap air travel allowed almost anyone to travel virtually anywhere. The British developed a desire for beach holidays in sunny climates, exploring remote foreign regions and adventure. Suddenly, there was a great demand for information about unknown places. Many of us travelled widely only to discover on our return the beauty of our own green and lush country and how little we knew of it.

Our attitude to holidays has evolved over the years. We know that we cannot expect wall-to-wall sunshine for seaside holidays in Britain but we also now appreciate the dangers of UV and the need to protect our skin. There is a move to rediscover the British seaside holiday and an acknowledgement that we can make the most of sunny days on the beach and plan days out for periods of inclement weather. Our expectations of holidays and activities have also altered - simple donkey rides no longer suffice. At one time, everyone bought rock to take home as a gift for friends and family; sales of rock have declined sharply as people became better informed and looked after their teeth. Just as cheap flights opened up foreign travel, higher oil prices and more expensive air travel is forcing more of us into staycations and holidays in the UK. This is becoming a time to celebrate the UK and Ireland and to enjoy the delights on our doorstep.
